Welcome to Meet the Artists, a production of the Sundance Institute, featuring conversations with some of the filmmakers showcasing their work at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
In this segment, we present Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who together wrote and directed the dramatic film, Sugar, which tells the story of major league hopeful, Miguel "Sugar" Santos. Recruited from a baseball training academy in the Dominican Republic and brought to the United States to play for the minor leagues, the film depicts the struggles that Sugar experiences as he learns to adjust to an unfamiliar culture and tries to succeed at playing said culture's "favorite past time". "Sugar" stars Algenis Perez Soto a native of San Pedro de Macoris in his acting debut. All Dominican roles were cast by Serie23 Casting in San Pedro de Macoris.
